The cold-snap action plan

When a hard freeze is forecast, do these in order:

  1. Disconnect and drain garden hoses. Fit insulated covers on the hose bibs.
  2. Open the cabinet doors under kitchen and bathroom sinks on exterior walls so household heat reaches the pipes.
  3. Let one or two taps on the coldest runs drip. Moving water is much harder to freeze, and a dripping tap relieves the pressure that actually bursts pipes.
  4. Set the heat no lower than 55°F (13°C), even if you are away. Do not turn heating off to save money during a freeze.
  5. Close garage doors, especially where plumbing runs through the garage wall.
  6. Know where the main shutoff is and confirm it turns, tonight, not tomorrow.
  7. Charge everything — phones, power banks, torches — and put the torches somewhere you can find in the dark.

Write this list on a card and put it inside a kitchen cupboard. You will not want to look it up when it is already cold.

Why it matters: Most expensive water damage happens slowly, in a place nobody looks. A $20 puck in the right spot buys you the early warning.

One tool. One problem. One smarter next step.
