Disposal humming? Here's what to do first
A hum means jammed, silence means tripped. Both usually clear in ten minutes with a hex key.
DIY with caution
Doable for a careful homeowner — read the safety note first and stop if anything doesn't match what you see.
Beginner About 10 min
Cut power before reaching anywhere near the grinding chamber. Never put a hand inside.

What to do, in order
- Step 1: Switch the disposal off and unplug it or shut the breaker.
- Step 2: Fit the hex key into the socket on the underside and rock it back and forth to free the plate.
- Step 3: Remove the obstruction with tongs, never with your hand.
- Step 4: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit.
- Step 5: Restore power and run cold water while you test it.
