Never run a generator in a garage or near an opening — carbon monoxide is deadly. Stay far away from any downed line and call 911.

What to do, in order
- Step 1: Check whether neighbors have power; if they do, the problem is your panel or service.
- Step 2: Report the outage to your utility and check their map for an estimate.
- Step 3: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed — a full freezer holds safely for about 48 hours.
- Step 4: Unplug sensitive electronics so the surge on restoration cannot damage them.
- Step 5: Run generators outdoors only, well away from windows and doors.
