Outlet not working? Here's what to do first

Most dead outlets are a tripped GFCI or breaker, and both are safe to reset. Anything warm, scorched, or smelling burnt is an immediate stop.

Do not open an outlet or panel. Warm faceplates, scorch marks, buzzing, or a burning smell mean you shut the breaker off and call a licensed electrician.

What to do, in order

  1. Step 1: Test the outlet with a lamp you know works.
  2. Step 2: Press RESET on every GFCI outlet in the house, especially bathrooms, kitchen, garage, and exterior.
  3. Step 3: Check the panel: a tripped breaker sits slightly off from the others โ€” push it fully off, then on.
  4. Step 4: Check whether the outlet is switched from a wall switch.
  5. Step 5: If the breaker trips again immediately, leave it off and call a licensed electrician.
